Proper Disposal and Storage of Medications

List of Medication Disposal Kiosks in Massachusetts

Guidelines for Disposal of Unwanted Medications.

  • Follow any specific disposal instructions on the drug label or patient information that accompanies the medication. Do not flush prescription drugs down the toilet unless this information specifically instructs you to do so.

  • Take advantage of Community Drug take-back events. Call your local health department or household trash and recycling departments for an updated list of events.

  • Utilize Medication Drop-off Kiosks located at your local Police Departments if available. Contact your local Police Departments to confirm.

Guidelines for Proper Storage of Medications

  • Lock up your medicines. Many retail outlets have medicine lock boxes for purchase, or just a simple lock on your cabinet or drawer would be fine. The theft and abuse of prescription medicines is a serious problem.

  • Never mix different medicines in the same bottle. You may accidentally take the wrong medication by mistake.
