The Tyngsborough Police Department (TPD) works directly with our residents to bring awareness to substance abuse and mental health issues in our community. We provide support with a multi-level approach. Prevention, crisis response, and recovery. As a town of approximately 12,000 residents, we are committed to supporting those with substance abuse challenges and other issues by connecting them with the help they deserve. When Should I be Concerned?
Someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis or engaged in substance abuse is likely to give off clues that they need help, such as:
- Marked decline in academic work or job performance
- Thoughts or acts of suicide or self-harm
- Indifference or lack of energy
- Noticeable change in sleeping or eating habits
- Noticeable change in personal hygiene, work habits, or general behavior
- Isolation or withdrawal
- Voicing hopelessness and helplessness in conversations, emails, or postings on social media.
Trust your gut. Although these signs don’t necessarily mean that a person is suffering from substance abuse or a mental health episode, if you feel worried about someone, you should act.
How Can I Help?
Don’t wait. If you have concerns there are many ways you can help. You can:
- Talk to the individual: The first step may be to simply talk to the person. Listen in a nonjudgmental way and let them know that you are concerned.
- Involve resources: If you don’t feel able to talk to the individual, reach out to others who might be able to encourage him or her to seek help.
- Encourage intervention: It can be hard to take the first step, you can offer to make that first step for them by contacting the Police Department. All Tyngsborough community members have access to clinicians through the Front Line Initiative.
- Ask us for advice: TPD can give you advice on the best method to help someone. A mental health clinician is on call and can provide additional support if needed.
In partnership with the Tyngsborough Health Department, we are member of the William James College INTERFACE Referral Service. The William James INTERFACE Referral Service aims to help break down the “silos” that exist between various agencies, mental health providers, and systems that can often hinder access to mental health and wellness services for individuals. Through the Helpline that operates Monday-Friday from 9 AM- 5 PM, callers from subscribing communities will work with a Resource and Referral Counselor who will help them navigate the challenges of finding mental health services. Each caller from a subscribing community will be assigned a lead counselor who will provide matches to services, as well as provide information and resources about mental health and wellness.
