Resources for Providers

Community partnerships are important in addressing Substance Use Disorder (SUD). Below are tools for providers that will assist in guiding patients and clients to the resources they need to manage SUD, including information on treatment, housing, employment, harm reduction, recovery, and social supports.

Continuing Education for Providers

As providers, it is important that we stay up-to-date on the latest research, language, and resources for substance use disorder. Many professional certificates and licensures require continuing education, but not all require continuing education credits be earned on topics specific to substance use disorder. Talking to your certification and/or licensing body for education recommendations, or take advantage of the following resources:

NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals offers free and paid virtual trainings, in-person seminars, and independent study courses. Check out their education page.
AdCare Educational Institute offers free and paid trainings and week long courses throughout the year, often with sponsorship by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health – Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. Check out their calendar of events page.
New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) Network hosts a variety of trainings and educational opportunities. Check out their training and events calendar for upcoming opportunities.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health – Bureau of Substance Addiction Services advertises a list of organizations that offer training and continuing education for individuals and educators working in substance use prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery support across the Commonwealth.
Since 2018, every December the Greater Lowell Health Alliance has hosted an annual Merrimack Valley Substance Use Disorder Symposium for providers, educations, and community members to attend to expand upon their knowledge base and network. Destigmatize with Language

As a result of harmful attitudes and stereotypes, people with substance use disorder often face devastating consequences like discrimination in employment, loss of housing, and poor treatment from health care professionals. The words that we use to describe substance use disorder and individuals with substance use disorder impact our view of the disease, and therefore impact how we treatment people.

Check out Changing the Narrative, a network of reporters, researchers, academics, and advocates concerned about the way media represents drug use and addiction. They offer expert sources, including people with lived experience of the issues, and up-to-date, fact-checked, and evidence-based information on news and controversies
