Worker finding needles amid the damage done

LOWELL —Andres Gonzalez scanned the ground.

He wore plastic coated work gloves and probed the bushes with a claw tool, commonly used to pick up trash. Behind an air conditioning unit, he found what he was looking for: a used syringe.

“That’s 10, right?” he said. He picked it up with the claw and carefully transferred it to a orange bucket.

Ten minutes later, that number was up to 17.
